Clair Camp Ghost Town

Clair Camp is a well-preserved example of one of Death Valley's mining camp ghost towns. Deep inside one of the Panamint Mountain canyons, this camp originally served the Ratcliff Mine.  During its peak, the camp boasted a 4,200-foot long aerial tramway, a twenty-stamp mill and a 50-ton cyanide mill.  The Ratcliff Mine turned out to be the district's biggest producer.

The camp was used in the 1930's and 1950's to process leftover ore found in the tailings from mines all up and down the canyon.  This continued use, along with the fact that a caretaker lived at the camp until the early 1970's, has contributed to the site's preservation.  Unfortunately, since our first visit in 1995, the site is progressively being destroyed by vandals.
